Tamás Waliczky: Self Portrait with Food, 2022

In Hong Kong, perhaps eating is the most popular activity. There are plenty of excellent restaurants offering delicious food. It is common practice to take pictures of your dish with your mobile phone and share the photos with friends. This habit inspired the base layer of the animation.
The second layer of animation is about me, a westerner in Hong Kong, the outsider, with different habits, different eating culture, different kind of stomach.
From computer-animation-history perspective, in my work I would like to recall two different morph techniques. I could call the first one “line-morph”. Nestor Burtnyk and Marceli Wein used a similar technique in Peter Foldes’ film “Hunger”, one of the world’s first computer animations. The second could be named “surface-morph”. To my knowledge, it was first used in the ILM studio and was very popular in the late 80s, early 90s. The latter technique was very important to me, because after watching Michael Jackson’s video clip “Black or White” on TV, I realized how to produce such visual effect, and with my friend Imre Kovács I created our own morph software. Using this technique, I created one of my most successful works, the animation “Landscape” (1997).
In the present video I use a technique I call “layer-morph”, where different parts of the image are located at different depths and every layer has its own morph animation.

Computer animation installation.
